* I've tossed my hat in the ring over at Remix Madness, the free-for-all final round of the yearly event. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to write myself this week--though the quick-and-dirty format is appealing--but if anyone wants to play with any of my fics, feel free!
*
hp_beholder has begun! I'm already behind, but the first two fics, Smudge (Dean/Millicent, 1800 words, rated R) and Under the Surface (Orion Black/Abraxas Malfoy, 1800, PG), are both great. I love fics with Big Ideas, and Beholder always seems to be filled with them.
* I went to see Hunger Games this weekend. I thought I'd be more excited about a mainstream story about state oppression, but somehow it rang hollow for me. ( Cut for spoilers )

Happy birthday to two long-time, wonderful flisters whose humor, intelligence, integrity, and all-around amazing-ness have finally convinced the better half that fandom's not that bad, after all (not if people like you are involved). :)
For the lovely
rose71, ( The pot of tea I want to share with you sometime soon )
And for
schemingreader, ( Cookies almost as stellar as you are )

I'm actually not on twitter much at all, but I thought some of you who are (and who are interested in the politics of race and education in the US) might be interested in this campaign:

This hash-tag has been created in response to the Ethnic Studies ban in Arizona. It is designed to bring attention to the cultural gaps in our education; the gaps that widen as governments and school districts privilege some histories, while silencing other cultures and points of view. Over the next 5 days, beginning February 1, we ask that you Tweet, Facebook, or blog what you wished you learned in high school, in response to the below question: What do you wish you learned in high school as it relates to various cultural identities, histories, and perspectives?
It's interesting just to scroll through the tweets and see what folks wish they'd learned. I'm not sure if you need to be signed in to read, but here's a short Colorlines article if you can't see the tweets themselves.

Happy year of the dragon, everyone!
Birthday wishes go out to
aunty_marion and
joanwilder! May this next year bring you everything you hope for.
Finally a couple fannish notes for a Monday:
Glee: A rec: fix-it femslash: Rumor Has It, Santana/Brittany, Santana/OFC, 4000 words or so?, NC-17. In which Santana Lopez learns the hard way that a life can never be ruined, only lived, and lived, and lived. I don't watch this show and don't follow this fandom, but if you're like me, and third-hand reports of Santana's outing raised your blood pressure, you need to read this. Heartfelt, fierce, and pointed.
On a related note, I'm struck by the number of comments left by women who identify as queer. I always suspect fandom's filled with queer women, the notable lack of femslash aside, but here we are.
HP:
dysfuncentine! In an effort to write more this year, I signed up. *plots and schemes*
Sherlock:
krabapple has posted a thoughtful meditation on what a "fall" might mean in Sherlock. If you're interested in thinky thoughts about the last episode, take a look. And if you have any smart meta recs, link me, please? Somehow I'm not really in a fic-ish mood, but I'd love to read an intelligent review or analysis of any part of series 2.
Lewis: A quick question for folks who've seen "A Life Born of Life" ( under the cut (spoilers!) )
